U.S. and Mexican officials agreed Wednesday to deny a cross-border long-haul truck that picks up punitive tariffs on $ 2400000000 in U.S. products. Under the agreement, ending a nearly two decades ban Mexican trucks in the United States in half, Mexico this month, punitive tariffs, and remove the rest by the end of the summer. Said "The agreements signed today are a victory for traffic safety, and they are a boon for commerce," U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. The agreement resolves a number of road safety issues between the United States and Mexico's third largest trading partner. Under the new rules, Mexican trucks wear electronic monitoring systems for service hours and routes to follow. Drivers must test their ability to read English and understand U.S. road signs. They also need regular drug tests and thus control their driving records. Mexican trucks are not permitted for the carriage of goods between points in the United States to deliver. U.S. trucks will operate under the same rules in Mexico. Mexico imposed punitive tariffs more than two years and ranges from 5 to 25 percent, many U.S. agricultural products and industrial goods, including apples, pork, and personal-care products are affected. The agreement calls for Mexico to halve tariffs on 99 U.S. products within 10 days. The rest will be eliminated later this summer, attests to participate five days after the first Mexican carrier to transport the truck program. "Potentially we are at a total abolition of punitive tariffs in less than 45 days looking for," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. U.S. agricultural exports to help the 1.1 million jobs have been strong this year by 25 percent to Mexico already said Vilsack. Mexico bought 14500000000 $ in U.S. agricultural products last year. "For U.S. farmers and ranchers, the repeal of these duties, jobs and tax relief - lifting of restrictions on American products, the elimination of obstacles to deal with a major trading partner and putting Americans back to a time when work trade when the U.S. Agriculture continues record export figures, "said Vilsack. Texas was especially hard hit by punitive tariffs in Mexico, which hit $ 190 million hit to state agricultural products, including pork, wine, peanuts, onions and other commodities. An independent trucker group near Kansas City, Mo.-based but fumed about the agreement and said the public was not properly informed of its final details. "If the agreement is good for the U.S., why the hell [LaHood] sneaks in there to write?" Said Jim Johnston, president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, which has more than 151 000 members. "So much for their alleged transparency. Why not let the public the details before signing the agreement?" LaHood said the Obama-directed government "a broad range of concerns" of lawmakers, security had lawyers, industry representatives and others, as the proposal was issued in April. |
