Default Import Clearance Procedures for Personal Import (JAPAN)


Personal Import requires different procedures depending on the import clearance of transport of the imported goods, namely international mail services, international courier and cargo.


First, the use of the international postal service is explained below.
Goods not delivered the payment of taxes directly to the recipient from the nearest post office.
In the case of goods to which the amount payable of less than ¥ 10,000, or less than ¥ 300,000 and ¥ 10,000 products directly to you along with a statement of the duty on international mail and a statement on the payment of the delivered overseas Mail Customs Sub-branch of post. Next, the import of goods is explained with the help of international courier service.
For goods sent by international courier service, a customs broker clears the goods through customs for you. In this case, you are obliged, for their services in addition to the payment of duties, so it is advisable to confirm the costs with the broker.

Finally, import of goods as cargo declared.
When goods arrive in Japan as general cargo, the carrier (airline or shipping company) notifies a receiver of goods on arrival. Importers can ask Customs agents to file their declarations.
