Default Importing Wood into the United States


The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) monitors the conditions on the import of products made of wood. APHIS allowed the importation of products of wood to use that one of the two methods pest control. Both methods aim at the risk of introduction of alien pests and diseases in the U.S. One remedy is to heat treatment, which involves the use of an oven dryer or dry heat, such as microwave energy dryer. The other is a chemical treatment, which includes the use of pesticides surface, preservatives or fumigated with methyl bromide. Since 1 April, wooden products from China, the bark contain are subject to additional restrictions. For details, please contact APHIS.





Both exporters and importers face additional requirements if the wood is shipped to the United States under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES listed). Timber species under the Convention listed plants require some or all of the following prior to entry in the United States

A general permit (valid for 2 years) issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture

Allowances by the CITES representative organization in the exporting country, the states that the product exhibited no adverse effect on the survival of these species and that the specimen was not obtained in violation of the laws of the land for the protection of fauna and flora

to accept certificates by the CITES representative organization in the importing country of arrival in a U.S. port issued authorizing shipments of CITES listed species.
